With a voice that has been likened to, among others, Joni Mitchell, Rickie Lee Jones, the late Eva Cassidy, and Shawn Colvin, Marji Zintz is a solo vocalist/arranger/acoustic guitarist who is known for her sweet voice; heart-felt, soulful interpretations; spot-on intonation; extensive, genre-busting repertoire; and masterful guitar playing. Marji performs material that takes the listener on a personal journey of growth and loss and love as well as material that asks the bigger and harder questions. She uses the guitar to its fullest potential as a melodic, harmonic, and percussive instrument.
Marji's passion for music was ignited by her dad, who was always singing; he had a beautiful, smokey voice and excellent taste in music. Marji recalls many nights washing and drying dishes, and many long road trips, singing song after song after song with her dad and her sister ~ usually in 3-part harmony.
Aside from a couple of sessions with the "Mayor of Greenwich Village," Dave Van Ronk, Marji is entirely self-taught on guitar. Marji also enjoyed the benefit of a few sessions with jazz vocalists Janet Lawson and Jay Clayton, and has been influenced by Joni Mitchell, Sheila Jordan, Billie Holiday, Tony Bennett, the Beatles, Betty Carter, Eddie Jefferson, Chet Baker, and Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, to name a few.
Marji brings a long and diverse performance resume, working in myriad settings since the 1970s as a vocalist and guitarist. She has performed in voice/double bass duets with such notable players as Mike Richmond, Jay Anderson, Josef Pelletier, and Vin Warner. She also worked in a progressive jazz-based ensemble that included Erik Lawrence on reeds and Jim Kunkel on guitar, often using her voice as one of the horns. She has worked in collaboration with improvisational vocalists Victoria Christgau and Shula Ruth Weinstein in a mostly a capella recording and performance project called Sister Sound, and has arranged, recorded, and performed with many other innovative musical projects over the years as well as performing as a soloist. And, she is currently one third of the innovative trio Becoming Human, performing original songs of observation, realization & transformation.
Marji also teaches guitar and coaches voice and harmony in the Hudson Valley.
In addition to performing the original compositions of her friends who are internationally acclaimed, very gifted songwriters, including Michael Fracasso and Eric Wood, and more regionally known artists such as Jim Lord, Jim Kunkel, and EC Lorick, Marji interprets and covers a wide range of material crossing into several genres, from folk to rock to jazz, including Tom Waits, Jobim, Cole Porter, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Her songbook is as extensive as it is diverse, allowing her to perform easily for five hours without repeating herself.
Marji has shared the bill with such diverse acts as Koko Taylor, Vance Gilbert, Tracy Grammer, David Amram, Pete Seeger, sonia and disappear fear, Spook Handy, Tom Paxton, Jonathan Edwards, the Kennedys, and Robbie Robertson and has performed and/or recorded with Jim Kunkel, Josef Pelletier, Jay Anderson, Mike Richmond, Vin Warner, Ron Wilson, Robert Weinstein, EC Lorick, Dawn Casteel-Lorick, John Marshall, Victoria Christgau, and Shula Ruth Weinstein.
